February 2010 “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning gave us these charming words. I found them in a book of poems my grandmother gave me (and as I recall I had to memorize the poem in its entirety when I was in the fourth grade). She wrote beside this poem the words, “My favorite.” I do believe she loved my grandfather with all her heart. There is another poem in the book entitled, “Music I Heard” by Conrad Aiken. It speaks of time spent with a loved one listening to music and breaking bread; how the hands touched the table, the silver, the glass, and the memory that will never pass. Oh, but the table nor the silver nor the glass will remember the touch, but the heart does – the heart remembers it well. Expressions of love can come in many ways – far more than the proverbial three simple words, “I love you.” And who doesn’t love to hear them? But I find other expressions of love to be somewhat more endearing, like the pet names my husband calls me, the frequent phone calls I get from my grown children, the sound of lilt in my mother’s voice when I call her, and if you own a cat (which I do not and am allergic to…) you know they have no qualms about public displays of affection! They will snuggle right up against you without waiting to be asked. I said all of that to say this. How do we express our love to God? Are we just using the same old worn out phrases? Don’ t you think He would like to hear “I love You” in a myriad of ways? How do we love Thee? Let us count the ways… “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” Matthew 22:37 |

Broken and Spilled Out One day a plain village woman Driven by love for her Lord Recklessly poured out a valuable essence Disregarding the scorn And once it was broken and spilled out A fragrance filled all the room Like a prisoner released from his shackles Like a spirit set free from the tomb Broken and spilled out Just for love of me Jesus God's most precious treasure Lavished on me You were broken and spilled out And poured at my feet In sweet abandon Lord, You were spilled out And poured out for me CCLI 1031936 |
